How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize bars, pigs, slabs, or scrap tightly in packages; add edge protectors and steel banding to keep the soft alloy from shifting or deforming in transit.
- Mark the BOL clearly: “Babbitt metal (>10% tin), bars/pigs/slabs/scrap, in packages — NMFC 135400, Class 60” so carriers rate it correctly without density checks.
- For scrap, use lined crates or sealed boxes to contain fines and prevent leakage; label as clean, dry, and oil-free to avoid carrier refusals.
- Build square, stable loads with no protrusions, shrink-wrap for containment, and request a liftgate or forklift-ready pallets if docks aren’t available.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 eliminates density calculations, delivering faster quotes and fewer reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous status reduces fees and paperwork, broadening carrier options and improving transit flexibility.
- Correct packaging and labeling lower OS&D and accessorial risks, protecting margins on heavy metal shipments.
- Consistent NMFC identification streamlines audits and accelerates pickup and dock processing for LTL.
