How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm it’s silver-plated on base metal (not solid or sterling silver). Typical lots include flatware handles, electrical contacts, and plated housings.
- Choose packaging fit: double-wall boxes with liners, tight-lidded steel/plastic drums, or machine-pressed bales wrapped in burlap; then band each unit to a pallet.
- Protect the load: contain small bits, pad sharp edges, and fill voids to stop shifting. Keep individual boxes under 75–90 lb for safe handling.
- Document precisely: list NMFC 136160, Class 100, non-hazardous on the BOL. Include container counts and weights, and request liftgate or appointments if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating delivers predictable quotes and eliminates density calculations, speeding up rate shopping and tendering.
- Flexible packaging (boxes, drums, burlap-wrapped bales) lets you match material costs to the scrap stream and optimize trailer space.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and special routing, lowering total landed cost and simplifying compliance.
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass fees and OS&D risk, protecting margins for scrap dealers, recyclers, and precious metal refiners.
