Notes
Note 13722: NOTE-Applies on articles named when crowned (curved) or not crowned, or with flanges, in stock lengths or cut to specific size, and whether or not punched or slotted.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 13720 and Class 85 on the BOL, and note “not coiled” to distinguish from coil-rated items under Note 13722.
- Bundle straight aluminum slats, flashing, and fasciae with edge protectors, then band to a pallet or skid to prevent bending or kinks in transit.
- Call out the longest piece length on paperwork; many LTL carriers add surcharges for pieces over 8–12 ft, common with porch or carport fascia.
- Separate small hardware from long members and pack in cartons within the bundle to avoid loss and to keep the shipment rated as packaged aluminum components.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees and invoice surprises.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds quoting and carrier selection for awning, shutter, and canopy projects on tight timelines.
- Damage-resistant bundling for long, light aluminum lowers claim risk and keeps replacement lead times in check.
- Non-hazardous aluminum group status streamlines compliance and reduces handling restrictions for LTL operations.
