How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the items are empty/inert and state “mine primer cases—no energetics present” on the BOL to prevent hazmat misclassification at pickup.
- Pack in sturdy corrugated boxes with foam or cell dividers; cap threads or delicate edges and add 2 inches of cushioning to resist drop impacts.
- Reference NMFC 145930, Class 100, Ordnance Group on the BOL and labels; avoid mixing these cartons with live primers or explosive components in the same shipment.
- For multi-carton moves, unitize on a pallet with corner boards and two nylon straps; label orientation and part numbers to speed receiving at defense facilities.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Class 100 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk, even when carton densities vary.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and restrictions, opening more carrier options and faster transit times.
- Box-ready packaging reduces OS&D and claim exposure, improving delivery performance to depots, OEMs, and MRO sites.
- Clear NMFC alignment supports audit-ready documentation, minimizing terminal holds and security-related delays.
