How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the items are inert and empty, then mark each package clearly as EMPTY/INERT. List NMFC 146410 and Class 85 on the BOL to avoid reclass.
- Use sturdy cartons or wooden crates with foam or dividers so casings cannot move. Protect fins, threads, and edges from abrasion and impact.
- Ship strictly in packages as required by the tariff—no loose or exposed pieces. If palletizing, palletize packaged boxes, not bare casings.
- Provide supporting documentation or photos when requesting carrier approval, especially for ordnance-shaped items, to speed acceptance and avoid delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and quoting—no density math, reducing reweigh/reclass fees and disputes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
- Packaging-only requirement minimizes handling risk and claim exposure, helping maintain better damage ratios and insurance terms.
- Clear labeling and documentation accelerate dock throughput and cut detention time, improving schedule reliability for defense contractors and recyclers.
