How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density for each handling unit: weigh it, determine cubic feet, then divide weight by cube (e.g., 50 lb ÷ 10 cu ft = 5 pcf) to select the correct class within 50–400.
- Pack loosefill materials (packing peanuts, shredded paper, excelsior) in sealed liners inside sturdy boxes, then stretch-wrap to pallets to prevent spills and avoid reclass or clean-up fees.
- Ship absorbent booms/pads and spill berms clean and unused; bag and box them to contain fibers and note “unused absorbents” on paperwork to maintain non-hazardous status.
- For bulky items like futons, plastic ground mats (e.g., AlturnaMat), and seat cushions, palletize flat with corner boards and straps; compression or vacuum-bagging can raise density and help lower the freight class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you cut costs by increasing package density through compression or tighter pack-outs on soft goods.
- One NMFC covers varied items—cushions, mats, loosefill—so mixed shipments can move under a single line item, reducing admin time and billing errors.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat paperwork and surcharges, speeding tendering and simplifying carrier selection.
- Accurate weights and well-contained packaging minimize reweigh/reclass fees and claims, helping you hold quoted LTL rates.
