How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item fits: complete skateboard wheel assemblies (polyurethane wheels with bearings) shipped in corrugated boxes qualify under NMFC 15480, Class 65.
- Package tightly: sleeve or bag each set, add dividers or trays, and fill voids so bearings don’t bruise through cartons during LTL handling.
- Mark cartons clearly: list set count per box and note “Wheel Assemblies – NMFC 15480 / Class 65” on the BOL to prevent reclass delays.
- Palletize smart: use 40x48 pallets, keep boxes square to the deck, add corner boards, strap, and wrap so stacks don’t migrate in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 65 rating eliminates density math, speeding quotes and reducing disputes across carriers.
- “Boxed” packaging alignment lowers reclass risk and unexpected accessorials, stabilizing landed costs.
- Durable, compact assemblies allow tight cube utilization, improving cost per set on multi-carton or palletized LTL moves.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and special paperwork, accelerating cross-dock flow and delivery.
