How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match your product to the proper athletic sub-item (balls, mats, bats, nets, goals) within the group; note the packaging type on the BOL (e.g., 6 cartons, 2 tubes, 1 crate).
- Use form-fitting packaging: bats and poles in fiber tubes with capped ends; rolled mats bagged then boxed; disassembled metal goals crated with edge protection.
- Keep lengths under 96 inches where possible to avoid oversize fees; palletize mixed SKUs tightly so cartons and tubes do not overhang.
- Declare non-hazardous status and list counts by package type to speed pickup and prevent reclass, especially for mixed sporting goods shipments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Simplifies rating for mixed sporting goods by consolidating under the Athletic Goods group, reducing line items and admin time.
- Correct packaging for odd shapes (tubes, crates, double-wall cartons) cuts damage risk and lowers claim costs.
- Accurate item identification within the group reduces carrier reclass/reweigh charges and stabilizes LTL quotes season to season.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and can unlock more competitive freight rates and faster service.
