How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 15870 on the BOL for pinsetters/pinspotters, pit cushions, foul lines, kickbacks, floor sections (KD), returnway racks, posts, and Parts, NOI—every item must be in packages.
- Crate heavy steel assemblies and posts; use double-wall cartons for pit cushions and foul-line kits; wrap and edge-protect floor sections; band to skids and label each package.
- Separate fragile sensors and foul-line components from metal attachments with partitions and foam; add corner boards and mark long kickbacks to prevent top-stacking and fork strikes.
- Rate at fixed Class 77.5 (no density needed), but list weight and dimensions to avoid length, cubic, or over-width surcharges—for example, 96 in kickbacks may incur fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at fixed Class 77.5 - no density disputes or surprise reclasses.
- Complying with the in-packages requirement reduces billing adjustments and speeds dock handling.
- Robust crating cuts claims on high-value pinsetter heads and return racks, lowering total install and refurbishment costs.
- Non-hazardous code broadens carrier options and lets you consolidate mixed wood, rubber, and metal items on one BOL.
