How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package each aluminum hatch cover with edge guards and foam, then band to a sturdy skid with polyester strapping to prevent denting and scuffing.
- Bag and label small parts like hinges or latches separately inside the package; note part counts on the BOL to avoid OS&D disputes.
- Mark freight as “Aluminum Hopper Car Hatch Covers – In Packages” and “Top Load Only”; avoid stacking heavy items above to prevent warping.
- When quoting LTL, include NMFC 166115, material (aluminum), and packaging type (packages); verify final rating since class range is not specified.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduces damage claims by protecting soft aluminum surfaces and edges, keeping covers fit-for-service on arrival.
- Faster dock handling: palletized, banded packages move as single units, cutting rehandle time and detention costs.
- Clear NMFC reference and nonhazardous status streamline carrier acceptance and minimize reclassification or inspection delays.
- Optimized cube with tight bundling and accurate dimensions can lower billed weight and help secure better LTL rates.
