How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Enter NMFC 16656 and Class 70 on the BOL; mark piece count and the longest length on each package to prevent misrouted long freight charges.
- Protect ends and surfaces: add end caps, use corrugated sleeves or PVC tubes, and band poles into tight bundles that can’t roll; block or palletize for forklift handling.
- Separate mixed materials (aluminum, steel, composite, wood) with dividers to avoid abrasion and corrosion transfer—especially for outdoor rail kits.
- Flag overlength items during quoting and pickup; request side-access or curtain-side equipment when shipping long volleyball uprights, net posts, or track-and-field poles.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—no density math and fewer reclass disputes.
- Damage reduction from proper packaging keeps poles straight, cutting returns on volleyball uprights and net rails.
- Bundled, clearly labeled packages speed terminal handling and can lower accessorial risk.
- Non-hazardous classification streamlines carrier selection and accelerates tender-to-pickup timing.
