How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure and weigh the boxed or crated scoreboard, then calculate density (PCF) by dividing pounds by cubic feet of the outer package; record this figure for the BOL.
  2. Follow Item 170: use double-wall boxes with foam or a custom wood crate, protect the display face with rigid edge guards, and immobilize controllers, brackets, and cables.
  3. Improve stability and density by consolidating accessories in dedicated inner packs within the same crate; block and brace so nothing shifts against LED digits or glass.
  4. Mark orientation and handling cues (This Side Up, Fragile) and add tilt/shock indicators for arena-sized units; list NMFC 17205 with the calculated density-based class on paperwork.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density entry minimizes reclass charges and inspection delays on LTL moves.
  • Crating high-value displays reduces damage claims and return shipments, protecting event schedules and sponsorship visibility.
  • Optimized pack-out can increase PCF and may qualify for a more favorable freight class, lowering linehaul and fuel surcharge impacts.
  • Non-hazardous commodity status simplifies tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges or special documentation.
