How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State on the BOL: “Shingles, cement/plaster/fiber composition with fiberboard back, NMFC 170430, Class 55,” and note packaging (e.g., 30 boxes on 2 pallets). No density rating needed.
  2. Pack flat and square: align fiberboard-backed shingles, add corrugated caps, corner boards, and two or more steel or poly straps. Avoid pallet overhang and mark “Do Not Top Load.”
  3. Control moisture and abrasion: poly-wrap bundles, use kraft or foam slip sheets between layers, and, for crates, pad edges with V-boards to protect fragile corners.
  4. Plan handling and delivery: request long forks or a fork spreader for wide pallets, keep bands accessible for inspections, and add “Keep Dry” labels for jobsite drops.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 rating reduces reclass bills and simplifies quoting for roofing distributors and supply yards.
  • Non-hazardous material status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges or special documentation.
  • Defined packaging (boxes, bundles, crates) speeds dock handling and lowers breakage risk, cutting claim costs.
  • Predictable LTL pricing enables accurate delivered-cost bids on reroofing projects and large lot shipments.
