How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure and weigh the boxed or crated scoreboard, then calculate density (PCF) by dividing pounds by cubic feet of the outer package; record this figure for the BOL.
- Follow Item 170: use double-wall boxes with foam or a custom wood crate, protect the display face with rigid edge guards, and immobilize controllers, brackets, and cables.
- Improve stability and density by consolidating accessories in dedicated inner packs within the same crate; block and brace so nothing shifts against LED digits or glass.
- Mark orientation and handling cues (This Side Up, Fragile) and add tilt/shock indicators for arena-sized units; list NMFC 17205 with the calculated density-based class on paperwork.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entry minimizes reclass charges and inspection delays on LTL moves.
- Crating high-value displays reduces damage claims and return shipments, protecting event schedules and sponsorship visibility.
- Optimized pack-out can increase PCF and may qualify for a more favorable freight class, lowering linehaul and fuel surcharge impacts.
- Non-hazardous commodity status simplifies tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges or special documentation.
