How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Silicon Carbide Briquettes — NMFC 176390, Class 55” on the BOL and note packaging details, e.g., “4 pallets, boxed, metal strapped.”
- Palletize tightly: choose sturdy, 4‑way pallets, keep boxes fully within the pallet footprint, and use edge protectors under steel banding to prevent crush or strap cut-in.
- Apply at least two metal straps each way across the load; then stretch‑wrap to contain dust and fines. Mark pallet counts and piece counts for accurate LTL handling.
- Load heavy pallets low and centered. Avoid stacking with fragile freight; use blocking/bracing in trailers to stop shift during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and minimizes costly reclass or inspection fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier acceptance and typically secures better rates for dense industrial materials.
- Correct strapping and packaging reduce OS&D claims, keeping projects on schedule and improving vendor scorecards.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds rating, auditing, and TMS automation, shortening the quote-to-book cycle.
