How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density from the packed piece: measure the exterior crate or box (L×W×H in inches), convert to cubic feet, then divide total weight including accessories to find PCF for class 50–400.
- Stabilize measuring arms, jigs, and pulling components with blocking and foam-in-place. Use rigid crating for long rails or towers to prevent flex and calibration drift.
- Mount heavy benches or fixtures on a lift-truck skid or pallet inside the crate and mark center-of-gravity so docks can handle with forks from the correct side.
- Label contents clearly: “Automobile Checking Fixture/Collision Repair System – Precision Equipment.” Include a packing list noting loose chains, clamps, and crossbars to avoid shortage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-size freight class via density to control LTL spend and avoid surprise reclass fees on bulky but dense frame benches.
- Damage reduction from proper crating and internal bracing keeps precision measuring systems in spec, cutting downtime and costly recalibration.
- Clear handling cues and palletized loading speed cross-docks, improving on-time performance for body shops and OEM repair programs.
- Accurate itemization of attachments (towers, clamps, rails) streamlines claims and audits, protecting margin on high-value repair systems.
