How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL: “Steel multi‑wall tanks, combined wall ≥ 1/2 inch — NMFC 181480 — Class 85.” This avoids density inspections and reclass fees.
- Support each tank in welded cradles or heavy skids with chocks, then band and strap. Cap/plug all nozzles and protect fittings with guards or foam blocks.
- Ship empty, drained, and dry. If tanks previously held flammable or regulated product, include a residue‑free or gas‑free/purge statement for carrier acceptance.
- Select equipment by footprint and height: LTL for standard sizes under 96 in tall, or flatbed for oversized tanks. Use lift points; do not wrap slings around nozzles.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85—no density math—accelerates quoting and reduces surprise adjustments.
- Heavy multi‑wall steel (≥1/2 in combined) resists dents and punctures, lowering OS&D risk and claim costs.
- Clear NMFC alignment (181480) minimizes inspections and reclass penalties, streamlining billing and audits.
- Cradle-and-skid packaging enables fast forklift handling and safer transfers, shortening dock time and improving jobsite schedules.
