How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate PCF precisely: measure each carton’s outer dimensions in inches, compute cubic feet (L×W×H ÷ 1728), then divide weight by cubic feet. Print the PCF and selected class on the BOL, noting “Subject to Item 170.”
- Stabilize spools: keep cores vertical, use dividers or honeycomb pads, tape thread ends, and polybag to prevent unwinding. Use edge protectors and wrap cartons tightly if palletizing.
- Right-size packaging to improve density: avoid oversized boxes and excessive void fill. Example: downsizing a carton that halves empty space can materially lower the density-based class.
- Label clearly for correct NMFC: write “Thread, NOI, in boxes” and reference NMFC 182280 to avoid confusion with yarn or wire goods and to prevent reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize freight spend by improving pack density, which can qualify shipments for lower classes within the 50-400 range.
- Cut reclass and reweigh fees by publishing accurate PCF and Item 170 on the BOL, reducing disputes and invoice surprises.
- Reduce damage risks with rigid cartons, internal separators, and proper orientation—fewer claim costs for textile and apparel supply chains.
- Speed rate shopping and quoting: density-driven classification under NMFC 182280 enables faster, consistent LTL pricing across carriers.
