How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify the exact material and format on the BOL—ceramic, porcelain, stone tile or wood/PVC molding—and include counts and packaging (e.g., 12x24 tile, 8 cases on 1 pallet).
- Package by product: stack boxed tile on a 48x40 pallet with corner boards and stretch wrap; crate loose stone; bundle 8‑ft cove molding in 10‑piece packs with end caps and banding.
- Control dimensions and overhang: keep pallets flush and under 48x48; for long molding, book carriers that accept 96–108 in lengths or disclose a length surcharge upfront.
- Protect edges and finishes: add slip sheets, foam, and edge guards; avoid top-loading delicate molding under heavy tile; mark Do Not Double Stack if crates can’t take top load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear grouping use reduces reclass risk and surprise rebills by aligning your BOL to the correct tile/molding family.
- Palletized or crated, stackable packaging improves cube efficiency and can earn better LTL rates versus irregular, non-stackable freight.
- Planning for long lengths prevents excess-length charges ($75–$200) and improves terminal handling, reducing damage touchpoints.
- Stronger edge protection and crating cut breakage and claims, keeping projects on schedule and lowering total landed cost.
