How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Palletize each cart with wheel chocks or lumber blocks so the wheels can’t roll, then band through the metal frame (not through the wheels or handle).
  2. For single premium units, crate or corner-board and stretch wrap to protect finishes; cap sharp toe-plate edges and secure loose straps or chains.
  3. Measure after packaging at the widest points, including handles, wheels, and toe plate; note overhang so the pallet remains forklift-safe.
  4. Describe clearly on the BOL: “Hand barrel cart, non-powered,” include frame material (steel or aluminum), accessories (brakes, straps), and add photos for faster carrier approval.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate description and packaging prevent reclass and reweigh fees, reducing surprise costs on LTL invoices.
  • Blocking and banding minimize transit damage, lowering claim risk and preserving resale value for drum-handling equipment.
  • Pallet-ready carts speed dock handling and pickups, helping you hit delivery windows and avoid redelivery or detention charges.
  • Nesting two light carts on one 48x40 with dunnage can cut cost per unit without compromising stability.
