How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 18900 at Class 100 when shipping complete instrument panel assemblies; note “boxed” on the BOL and mark Fragile/Do Not Stack for LTL handling.
- Pack in double‑wall corrugated boxes with custom foam or end-cap inserts; bag clusters and screens in ESD sleeves and cap protruding vents or switch stalks.
- If palletizing, center boxes on a 48x40 pallet, add corner boards and a top cap, then stretch‑wrap and band to prevent torsion that can crack bezels.
- Remove any airbag modules before shipment and send separately under proper hazmat rules; coil and zip‑tie wiring harnesses, and bag loose hardware.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: a fixed Class 100 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing rating disputes.
- Lower reclass and damage costs by following the boxing/pallet‑secure guidance tailored to fragile electronics and trim surfaces.
- Smoother cross‑dock handling—properly secured boxes or pallets reduce touchpoints and chargebacks from overhang or crush damage.
- Consistent pricing for OEMs, dealerships, and reman centers, helping forecast freight budgets for service parts and return logistics.
