How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify each unit weighs 5,000 lb or more and note the exact weight on the BOL; lighter models may require a different NMFC.
- Secure on heavy-duty skids or cradle frames, block under axles, chock wheels, and chain through factory tie-down points; cap hydraulic ports and protect the drawbar.
- Book proper handling gear: forklifts rated 8,000–10,000 lb or a crane; confirm site access, ramp availability, and whether loading is from dock, ground, or flatbed.
- Provide overall length including tongue, width at tires, and height for deck planning; note if fluids are drained and declare Non-Hazmat on paperwork.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 110 eliminates density disputes, reducing reclass fees and invoice surprises.
- Proper blocking and bracing for high-mass wagons lowers damage risk and claims costs.
- Clear NMFC 189040 speeds carrier acceptance and routing for construction and agricultural projects.
- Right-size the mode—volume LTL, partial truckload, or flatbed—to cut per-unit freight spend on heavy carts.
