How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density before booking: weigh the packaged unit and measure the outer box/crate to get PCF, then apply Item 170 for the correct freight class.
- Package to NMFC standards: use Package 2194 for children’s autos/trikes and Package 501 for bicycles/unicycles; remove pedals/handlebars, immobilize wheels, and protect plastic bodies.
- Match container to duty cycle: double-wall boxes for scooters and golf-club bag carts; wood crates or framed skids for heavier lawn spreaders or adult pedal vehicles.
- Document clearly on the BOL: describe as “child’s vehicle” or “adult pedal vehicle, plastic body,” include NMFC 189800 and the calculated density to prevent reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower LTL costs by increasing PCF with tighter packouts and right-size cartons, which can shift density-based classes downward.
- Reduce reclass and inspection fees by using the correct NMFC item and package codes (2194/501) and meeting box/crate requirements.
- Serve seasonal demand efficiently: consolidate scooters, sleds, and wagons for retail drops; density pricing rewards compact cubes and consistent packaging.
- Cut damage and claim rates by immobilizing axles and protecting plastic shells and frames, preserving resale value and customer satisfaction.
