How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the unit fits EPAMD scope: self-balancing, two non‑tandem wheels, electric drive. If it’s an e‑bike or kick scooter, use a different NMFC.
- Ship in sturdy boxes with wheel immobilizers and control-shaft padding. Keep chargers and accessories bagged so they don’t scuff housings.
- Print NMFC 190285 and Class 100 on the BOL. Mark boxes “This Side Up” and “Do Not Stack” if the manufacturer’s packaging calls for it.
- If the device contains a lithium battery, confirm it’s installed and protected per carrier rules. Note applies as non-hazmat here; review item note 190286 for scope details.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and eliminates density disputes, cutting time spent on reweigh/reclass issues.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat surcharges for standard EPAMD shipments.
- Boxed packaging enables efficient multi-unit consolidation on a skid, reducing touches and improving claims outcomes.
- Clear EPAMD definition prevents misrating as motorcycles or scooters, reducing unexpected charges and transit delays.
