How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Decide if you’re shipping the wagon assembled or knockdown (running gear, deck, sides). Assembled pieces trend toward the higher class; KD or crated parts often qualify for the lower class within 85–200.
- Stabilize moving components: chock and band wheels to skids, cap hubs, strap the tongue to the frame, and wrap sharp edges. Use blocking to keep axles from rocking during transit.
- Reduce length charges by removing the tongue or nesting sideboards. Aim for palletized sections where possible and keep components inside standard footprints to avoid overlength fees.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 191250 Farm Wagon,” list whether assembled or KD, include piece count and photos. This helps carriers apply the correct subclass and minimizes reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize spend by tendering knockdown shipments at the lower end of the class range, often yielding better LTL rates.
- Cut damage risk and claim costs with proper wheel restraints, dunnage between frames, and protective wrap on wood decks and finishes.
- Speed up quoting and carrier acceptance with a known NMFC (191250) and a clear subclass choice, reducing reclass disputes.
- Broaden carrier options—non-hazardous agricultural equipment typically moves without special hazmat surcharges or paperwork.
