How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density: weigh the full pallet and measure L×W×H, then divide pounds by cubic feet to set the class under Item 170 (e.g., 1,000 lb on 48×40×36 in ≈ 40 cu ft → ~25 pcf).
  2. Match packaging to form: pellets/flakes in poly‑lined bags within strong boxes; blocks/slabs in lined drums or pails; sealing wax in inner containers before boxing, per item language.
  3. Control heat and stacking: avoid hot trailers and walls, use insulated or temperature‑controlled service in warm months, top‑load soft boxes, band and chock drums to prevent shift.
  4. Protect quality: keep away from odor‑heavy freight, line pallets with kraft paper to prevent sticking, overwrap to contain crumbs, and label “Keep From Heat” with NMFC 196900.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density‑based pricing: tighter pack and drum use can raise PCF and drive a lower class within the 50–400 range, reducing LTL spend.
  • Non‑hazmat simplicity: no hazmat fees or special permits, broad carrier acceptance, and fewer accessorials tied to restrictions.
  • Fewer reclasses and claims: correct inner containers, liners, and clear density data minimize residue clean‑ups, inspections, and billing disputes.
  • Streamlined quoting: one NMFC for beeswax, shellac, candelilla, montan, ozokerite and more simplifies routing for candle, cosmetics, polish, and coatings shippers.
