How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Disassemble delicate pieces: pack the rooster/arrow head and N-E-S-W letters separately from the rod. Wrap copper or aluminum parts with foam and VCI paper to prevent scuffs and tarnish.
- For boxed shipments, float the vane in dense foam and place the spire/rod inside a capped PVC tube to stop bending. Add edge guards and a rigid backer under the tail.
- For crated moves, anchor the mounting bracket to cleats on the skid and cross-brace the shaft so it cannot flex. Keep fins and counterweights from touching the crate walls.
- Print the BOL with “NMFC 196950, Class 100, Non-Haz.” and use Do Not Stack/This End Up labels. If overall length exceeds 96 in., note potential overlength so carriers plan handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 gives predictable rating—no density rule—speeding quotes and reducing reclass risk.
- Right-size packaging (box for small boutique vanes, crate for architectural sizes) cuts damage claims and avoids service delays.
- Disassembly to shorten length can dodge overlength surcharges and reduce accessorial fees on LTL lanes.
- Consolidating multiple vanes and hardware in one crate lowers per-unit handling costs and simplifies pickups.
