How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package fibers in sift‑proof bags, cartons, or tightly strapped bales with poly liners to contain flyaway fibers and lanolin residue; palletize to prevent snagging.
- Control moisture and odors on raw or greasy wool: use breathable wrap, top/bottom sheets, and desiccant packs; mark BOL with “Keep Dry” and avoid co-loading with scented goods.
- Identify the fiber and form on the BOL: “Wool, NOI—alpaca/camel hair/mohair, baled” plus piece count and dimensions to avoid capacity disputes and reclass fees.
- Stabilize bales for LTL: band twice in both directions, protect edges with corner boards, and confirm stackability; allow stacking when compression won’t harm fiber quality.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI description reduces reclass charges and inspection delays when carriers cannot find a named sub-item.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and removes hazmat surcharges, improving lane coverage.
- Baled and palletized units cube out efficiently, lowering handling time and minimizing sifting or contamination claims.
- Moisture and odor controls protect fiber grade, preserving mill yield and reducing loss deductions on receipt.
