How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack the wrappers flat in cartons or bundled packages to protect the pulpboard from bending; avoid rolling. Example: stack 24x36 inch sheets with slip sheets and corner protectors, then band.
- Moisture-proof the load. Burlap, cotton, and pulpboard absorb water, so line cartons with poly, use stretch wrap, and request dry-van service—no floor drops in wet weather.
- Palletize cartons as unitized packages on 40x48 pallets with no overhang; add top caps and edge guards so fork tines and straps don’t fray fabric or delaminate pulpboard.
- Document precisely: list “NMFC 200220 – Bale Wrappers, Burlap/Cotton Stitched to Pulpboard,” note Class 65, non-hazardous, and include piece counts for clean receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: a fixed Class 65 rating enables accurate LTL quotes and easier budgeting for mills, gins, and recycling operations.
- Lower compliance burden: non-hazardous status avoids HazMat surcharges and special handling, speeding dock turns.
- Reduced reclass risk: using the exact NMFC description for burlap/cotton stitched to pulpboard helps prevent carrier upcharges and disputes.
- Damage prevention pays: flat, moisture-safe packaging protects edges and fabric, cutting claims and production downtime for downstream wrapping lines.
