How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Absorbent cotton or synthetic fiber balls, in packages, NMFC 21330, Class 200, non-hazardous” to avoid reclassification.
- Use sealed inner bags and sturdy outer cartons; add a moisture/odor barrier liner and desiccant to keep product dry and clean during LTL transit.
- Palletize light, bulky cartons tightly; use cornerboards and a top cap to prevent crushing, then stretch-wrap 5 sides to protect from contamination.
- Include lot/expiration and intended use (dental, surgical, cosmetic) on labels and packing lists for hospital and clinic receiving requirements.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 200—fast quotes and fewer billing disputes.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and reduces compliance overhead.
- Protection against moisture and odors cuts damage claims and return costs.
- Consolidating lightweight cartons on full pallets reduces handling fees and per-unit freight.
