How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product qualifies: electric wall-insert or baseboard heater, non‑portable, and without blowers or fans. Portable space heaters or fan‑assisted units should not use NMFC 26500.
- Pack to NMFC Packages 726 or 2248: rigid carton or approved package with foam end blocks and rail protection. Example: a 6‑ft baseboard heater uses full‑length edge guards and molded end caps inside a heavy carton.
- Palletize long units to avoid overhang. Use a pallet at least as long as the heater, add corner boards, strap in two directions, and mark Do Not Stack and This Side Up to protect fins and thermostats.
- List on the BOL: “Electric wall/baseboard heater, NMFC 26500, Class 125, boxed.” Add service needs (residential delivery, liftgate, call‑ahead) common for job sites and remodel locations.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 125—no density calculation, faster quoting, and clearer rate comparisons.
- Fewer reclasses and rebills by matching the exact scope (non‑portable, no blower) and using Packages 726/2248 as required.
- Lower damage risk: reinforced packaging and proper pallet length protect delicate heating elements, reducing claims and returns.
- No hazmat surcharges—electric heaters without fuel or fans simplify compliance and streamline carrier acceptance.
