How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 29590 and “Boxes, shipping, aluminum (nested, SU)” on the BOL, and rate at Class 125. This signals carriers that density is not required for pricing.
- Nest set-up boxes tightly and place corrugated or foam pads between each to prevent metal-on-metal scuffing, especially where aluminum contacts steel components.
- Palletize with even weight distribution; band using non-abrasive straps and edge guards. Cap bundles or shrink-wrap to keep nests from separating in transit.
- For mixed-material boxes (aluminum/steel/wood), isolate wood with poly sheeting to avoid moisture staining and add desiccant for long hauls or humid lanes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 simplifies quoting and eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass risk and speeding up LTL rate shopping.
- Nesting dramatically cuts cubic footprint, helping avoid capacity-related surcharges and lowering linehaul costs on return or repositioning moves.
- Accurate Box Group identification streamlines consolidation with other packaging assets, improving reverse logistics and backhaul utilization.
- Finish protection (pads, edge guards) lowers claim rates on reusable containers, preserving asset value and minimizing downtime for repairs.
