Notes
Note 34251: NOTE-Articles must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials necessary to afford adequate protection against damage.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging based on risk: use double-wall boxes with foam sheets for small sidelites, or a braced wood crate with corner blocks for larger transom lites headed to jobsites.
- Face-protect the glazed plastic surface with film or honeycomb pads, add edge guards, and mark orientation arrows; avoid clamp handling by labeling Do Not Clamp and Do Not Stack.
- Palletize boxes or crates with no overhang; band and stretch-wrap, then add a rigid top cap to deter top load. Example: two boxed sidelites on a 48x40 pallet with a corrugated cover.
- On the BOL, write a precise description: “Door lites, plastic, glazed, boxed/crated – NMFC 34250, see Note item 34251,” and confirm the class per current NMFTA rules before tendering.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC 34250 identification reduces reclass fees and billing disputes, keeping LTL quotes predictable for door and window suppliers.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and simplifies terminal handling, improving transit reliability for time-sensitive installs.
- Purpose-built boxes or crates cut damage risk on fragile glazed plastics, lowering claim rates and protecting project schedules and margins.
- Clear packaging and BOL detail streamline dock moves and cross-docking, trimming dwell time and minimizing accessorials like rework or storage.
