How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid boxes or wood crates sized to bar length; add end caps, edge guards, and V-blocks or cleats to prevent rolling and bending.
- Print a precise BOL description: Bars, glass setting, aluminum/brass/bronze/copper — NMFC 35720, Class 77.5, non-hazardous; include piece count and longest length.
- Block and brace inside the crate so bundles cannot shift; keep bars lengthwise and apply Do Not Stack labels if packaging can crush.
- Separate mixed metals with foam or corrugated sheets to avoid scuffing; for long runs (e.g., 12 ft bars, 20 pcs) use a 12.5 ft crate with internal tie-downs.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 in boxes or crates simplifies quoting and reduces reclass fees for glazing projects.
- One NMFC covers aluminum, brass, bronze, or copper bars, consolidating SKUs and streamlining LTL rating and routing.
- Damage control: proper crating limits bowing and surface marks, lowering claim rates and keeping storefront timelines on track.
- Predictable class enables better lane pricing and carrier selection, improving freight rate negotiations for building metalwork.
