How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package bars tightly in sturdy boxes or wooden crates with blocking and banding so lengths can’t shift or bow in transit; add corner and edge protectors to keep plating intact.
- Wrap zinc or copper‑plated zinc bars with VCI paper or poly to limit tarnish and surface scuffs; separate dissimilar metals with slip sheets to prevent rubbing and staining.
- List the exact metal type (lead–steel combined, zinc, or copper‑plated zinc) and piece counts on the BOL; label as “Glass‑Setting Bars” to avoid confusion with generic bar stock.
- For long lengths, center the weight and mark “Do Not Top‑Load”; provide accurate overall dimensions and weight for quoting even though the NMFC class is fixed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 means no density math and fewer surprise reclasses on metal bar shipments.
- Broader carrier choice and simpler compliance thanks to non‑hazardous status, improving transit options and lead times.
- Lower claims risk when boxed or crated per NMFC—bars arrive straight, with plating unmarred, reducing rework at the jobsite.
- Faster dock handling: clearly bundled and labeled glass‑setting bars move through LTL hubs more smoothly, cutting dwell and accessorials.
