How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL: “Steel sash mullions, packaged — NMFC 37060, Class 70, non-hazardous” to prevent reclass and inspection delays.
- Bundle bar stock tightly with steel or poly strapping, use edge protectors, and add hardwood dunnage; place on a full-length skid to avoid bowing.
- Group identical lengths and profiles together, tag each package with length and piece count, and request long-freight handling to avoid cantilever lifts.
- Load bundles lengthwise, block and brace to stop rolling, and cap sharp ends to protect coatings and nearby cargo during LTL transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 70 rating cuts billing disputes and reclass fees, improving margin on fenestration and glazing projects.
- Simple, non-density classification speeds quoting across mixed bar lengths and reduces admin time for estimators and dispatch.
- Efficient packaged bundles cube well on skids, lowering per-foot transportation cost for curtain wall and storefront fabricators.
- Clear labeling and reinforced packages reduce OS&D claims and jobsite delays, keeping install crews on schedule.
