How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use NMFC 37210 at Class 70 for quotes; this item is not density-based. Note iron or steel construction with metal or mineral filling and list the package count.
  2. Protect the nosing and edges. Apply foam or fiberboard edge guards and wrap to contain abrasive mineral fill so it doesn’t scuff neighboring freight.
  3. Keep packages lift-manageable. Bundle identical treads or risers into sturdy cartons, mark HEAVY or TEAM LIFT when needed, and place ‘This Side Up’ on filled pieces.
  4. Avoid point loads on filled treads. Lay packages flat with cushioning dunnage to prevent chipping or cracking of the metal/mineral infill during handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 70 rating simplifies rate shopping and reduces reclass/rebill risk for fabricators and jobsite deliveries.
  • Non-hazardous status opens more carrier options and helps keep transit planning straightforward for construction schedules.
  • Properly packaged filled treads lower damage rates, cutting replacement costs and avoiding costly installation delays.
  • Clear NMFC mapping streamlines purchasing and shipping paperwork, improving accuracy from mill to site receiving.
