How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 38409 on the BOL with a clear description: “Greenhouses, NOI, aluminum framing and multiwall plastic panels, disassembled, in boxes.” Include box count, heaviest weight, and longest piece length.
- Protect the fluted polycarbonate panels from edge crush: use corner/edge protectors, foam interleave, and rigid pads. Bag loose hardware and fasteners so they don’t puncture panels in transit.
- Ship as boxed sets; if unitizing, band boxes to a pallet with a full top sheet to spread weight. Note handling units as “1 pallet containing X boxes” while keeping the NMFC description as boxed.
- Disclose oversize risks early. Long aluminum extrusions (e.g., 96 in rails) can trigger additional handling—request proper accessorials and follow NMFC Note, item 38411, when applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at fixed Class 250—no density calculations, faster quoting, fewer reclass disputes.
- Accurate “in boxes” packaging on the BOL lowers exception fees and reduces inspection delays.
- Engineering kit pieces under 96 inches avoids oversize surcharges and special handling costs.
- Damage prevention for twinwall panels cuts replacement expense and improves customer satisfaction.
