How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare hazmat on the BOL and use the Proper Shipping Name and UN/NA number from the SDS; include a 24/7 emergency response phone.
- Use sturdy wooden boxes with tight closures; add inner liners and cushioning so candles can’t shift or abrade during LTL handling.
- Apply required hazmat labels/markings and mark gross weight on each box; keep away from food items and heat sources on the pallet.
- Coordinate pickup with a hazmat-authorized carrier and budget for hazmat accessorials; example: palletize 12 training candles with banding and corner boards.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct Class 150 classification prevents reclass fees and rebills, stabilizing your LTL rates.
- Wooden-box packaging lowers spill/irritant exposure risk, reducing claims and liability.
- Accurate hazmat documentation speeds dock clearance and minimizes pickup refusals or delays.
- Consistent NMFC usage improves multi-carrier quoting accuracy and supports insurance compliance.
