How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Start with Note, item 23810: match your Bill of Lading description to the note (state Carbon Group, form such as powder, granular, or pelletized, and your chosen packaging).
- Use dust-controlling packaging to prevent sifting and cleanup fees—poly‑lined bags, sealed fiber drums, or valve sacks on sturdy pallets with full stretch-wrap.
- Declare counts and weights clearly per package and per pallet; include form and packaging details so carriers can rate from the note without inspection delays.
- Add an SDS or product sheet when quoting to quickly confirm non-hazardous status and avoid hazmat misclassification; label pallets “Carbon Media – Non-Hazardous.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Note-based classification consistency reduces reclasses, inspections, and surprise rate adjustments across carriers.
- Dust-tight, palletized packing cuts spill cleanups and OS&D claims, protecting margins and customer relationships.
- Clear non-hazardous identification prevents hazmat surcharges and shortens carrier approval cycles for faster tendering.
- Standardized descriptions tied to Note 23810 streamline quoting and auditing, improving freight bill accuracy and budgeting.
