How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 42040 “Cement, radiator” and Class 70 on the BOL; density entry isn’t needed. Keep an SDS on file even though the item is non‑hazardous.
- Use robust, double‑wall corrugated boxes with sealed inner containers (cans or tubs). Line cartons with a poly bag and add absorbent pads to contain any seepage.
- Palletize in uniform rows on a 48×40 pallet. Avoid overhang, add corner boards, apply 3–4 wraps of stretch film, and use a moisture‑barrier top sheet labeled “Keep Dry.”
- For liquid or paste variants, protect from freezing during winter lanes with insulated liners and prompt transit selections; mark orientation arrows to prevent lid stress.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating streamlines quoting and limits costly reclass fees, improving rate predictability for recurring lanes.
- Non‑hazardous status widens carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges, accelerating tendering and pickup scheduling.
- Proper boxing and pallet patterns reduce damage claims on heavy, compact units, preserving margin and customer satisfaction.
- Standard cartonized shipments cube efficiently, enabling better trailer utilization and lower cost per unit versus parcel or mixed packaging.
