How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack in sturdy corrugated boxes with inner polybags or trays to contain small clips; for example, 5,000 steel crown-cap clamps bagged 500 per carton.
- Print NMFC 47970 and “Class 70” on carton labels along with piece count and material (steel or plastic) so carriers identify the correct rating quickly.
- Unitize cartons on pallets using edge protectors and stretch wrap; keep tight, even layers to prevent nesting and crush during beverage or cannery resupply.
- Quote without density—the item rates fixed at Class 70—but still record gross weight and outer dimensions for accurate LTL pricing and pickup planning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 70 rating reduces reclass fees and stabilizes LTL quotes across carriers.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat paperwork and surcharges, speeding dock throughput.
- Boxed packing limits loss of tiny components, cutting claims and repack labor for bottlers and food processors.
- Clear part counts and labeling streamline receiving for OEMs and distributors, improving inventory accuracy and turns.
