NMFC Description Class
50125.00 Compounds, chelating, dry or in aqueous solution, other than corrosive, in bags, boxes or drums 55

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the SDS shows the material is non-corrosive. If your chelating agent (e.g., EDTA solution or powder) is not corrosive, NMFC 50125 at Class 55 applies.
  2. Match packaging to form and keep it leak-tight. Use lined corrugated boxes for dry powders; for aqueous solutions, place sealed containers upright inside strong boxes and mark “non-corrosive.”
  3. Weigh the full shipment, including pallet, since class is weight-based. Note “NMFC 50125, Class 55 – chelating compounds, dry or aqueous, non-corrosive” on the BOL.
  4. Palletize to prevent shifts and seepage: tight stack patterns, stretch wrap, corner protection, and absorbent pads under liquid boxes. Example: 10 boxes × 25 lb = 250 lb.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower LTL spend from a fixed Class 55 versus many chemical items that rate higher.
  • No density math: weight-based classification reduces reclass risks and billing disputes.
  • Non-hazmat status avoids hazmat surcharges and opens more carrier options.
  • Clear, single-line NMFC mapping speeds quotes and pickups for water treatment, cleaning, and industrial supply chains.
