How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the product is a liquid cleaning compound and pack in rigid boxes or closed-head drums; boxes should use UN-rated inner containers with absorbent and a leakproof liner.
  2. Record gross weight for each box or drum on the BOL—classification is weight-based at Class 65, so no density is required; e.g., a 5-gal pail boxed at 48 lb rates at 65.
  3. Apply hazmat marks and labels: proper shipping name, UN/NA number, hazard class, and Limited Quantity marks if eligible; include SDS and 24-hour emergency contact.
  4. Palletize upright with closures up, use shrink wrap and a top cap, add orientation arrows, and note “Do Not Stack” if packaging isn’t stack-rated.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 65 rating streamlines quoting and keeps LTL pricing consistent across lanes.
  • Accurate hazmat paperwork avoids refusals, accessorial fees, and costly reclassification disputes.
  • UN-certified packaging and liners cut spill risk and claims, protecting brand reputation and customer retention.
  • Choosing boxed inners versus drums can optimize handling fees, damage exposure, and total landed cost per shipment.
