How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book at NMFC Class 60 and note “earthen, not reinforced” with or without rubber joints to avoid reclass disputes.
- Protect bells and spigots: add end caps, wrap rubber joints, and use padded dunnage; palletize small fittings, bundle straight lengths.
- Load with forklifts or slings that span the barrel to prevent chipping; block and brace bundles to stop roll and shift.
- Provide piece count, max length, and handling notes (fragile edges) on the BOL; request no-top-stack and inside delivery only if truly needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies rating and produces consistent LTL quotes for municipal and contractor shipments.
- Accurate description (“not reinforced,” with/without rubber joints) lowers reclass fees and billing corrections.
- Proper bundling and edge protection reduce breakage, improving claim outcomes and keeping project timelines on track.
- Consolidated pallets or pipe bundles cut handling touches, often lowering accessorials and improving transit reliability.
