How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Enter NMFC 53135 at Class 100 on the BOL and note packaging (box, crate, or Package 2397) plus piece count, e.g., “Glass refrigerator door with frame.”
- Keep doors vertical on a skid with foam spacers and corner/edge protectors; band to an A-frame or crate through the frame, not across the glass, and mark Do Not Lay Flat.
- If doors include lighting, cap connectors and secure harnesses inside the frame; add a short note like “includes lighting wires” to alert terminal handlers.
- Verify applicability against the description and See Note, item 53137; photograph packed freight, measure outside dimensions including cleats, and add tilt/shock indicators for claim support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating with fixed Class 100—no density calculation—speeds quoting and lowers reclass risk.
- Correct NMFC usage reduces billing disputes and strengthens claim defense for fragile, framed glass doors.
- Proper packaging (crate or Package 2397) cuts damage rates, helping avoid costly OS&D delays on remodel timelines.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and broad carrier acceptance for LTL and multi-stop retail deliveries.
