How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on your BOL as: "Cores, foundry, sand, in boxes — NMFC 53430 — Class 60 — Non-hazardous" to prevent reclass and speed dock processing.
- Use rigid double‑wall boxes with foam or corrugated partitions; cradle each sand core and add desiccant packs to keep binders dry during transit.
- Palletize gently: place boxes on a flat deck, avoid overhang, add corner boards, wrap with stretch film, and mark Do Not Stack or use cones if cores are fragile.
- Signal handling needs with Fragile and This Side Up labels; tilt/shock indicators can deter rough handling for complex or thin-walled cores.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 delivers predictable LTL pricing versus density-based items, helping you forecast shipping budgets accurately.
- Simple, single-line NMFC description reduces reclass fees and dispute time, improving invoice accuracy and cash flow.
- Box-friendly classification broadens carrier options and lanes, shortening transit times and improving service reliability.
- Moisture-aware packing lowers breakage and scrap rates, cutting replacement costs and production delays at the foundry.
