NMFC 54270 - Cotton Grabots or Immature Bolls | Cl 85-100

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

1. State the exact form on the BOL: write “cotton grabots” or “immature cotton bolls,” and note whether it is loose, bagged, or baled to ensure the correct class within 85–100.
2. Contain fibers and seeds: use breathable bags or well-tied bales, palletize, and wrap the load to prevent shed debris in LTL terminals and trailers.
3. Control moisture: dry before packing and use vented coverings so plant matter does not sour; add a liner or slip sheet to keep fines off the trailer floor.
4. Quote accurately for bulky freight: measure after settling, list stack height and footprint, and ask your carrier about cubic minimums or ODFM to avoid surprise charges.
