How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Roasted refractory dolomite, granular, NMFC 57520, Class 50,” and list total weight, bag/drum count, and pallet quantity for quick rating.
- Use heavy-duty pallets and stretch wrap with a top sheet; add corner boards for stacked bag loads to prevent abrasion and burst at forklift entry points.
- For drums, band to pallets with two cross straps and one girth strap; verify bungs/lids are secure and apply drum cones if double-stacking.
- Control dust and moisture: select sewn or heat-sealed bags with liners, or lined fiber/steel drums, and cover pallets with waterproof caps for outdoor transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Locked-in Class 50 eliminates density disputes, reducing reclass fees and quote variance on dense mineral shipments.
- Non-hazardous status speeds tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges or special handling delays.
- Clear commodity naming (roasted, clinkered, dead-burned) improves carrier acceptance and minimizes inspection holds.
- Stronger packaging and palletization cut spill risks, lowering cleanup costs and preventing claim deductions for contamination.
