How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 59380, Class 70 on the BOL and note “Sterile Water/IV Solutions—Boxed”; mark as non-hazardous for faster terminal handling.
- Pack bottles or IV bags upright with inner dividers; seal cartons, then palletize on 48x40 pallets and stretch-wrap to 80–90% height to prevent shift.
- Apply “Do Not Freeze” and “Keep Upright” labels; during cold months add protect-from-freeze accessorial and avoid weekend layovers to reduce freeze risk.
- Include lot numbers and expiration dates on packing lists; request delivery appointments for hospital pharmacies or clinical DCs to streamline receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 70 provides predictable mid-range LTL pricing, improving budgeting for recurring hospital and clinic replenishment.
- Non-hazardous designation removes hazmat paperwork and fees, accelerating pickups and reducing administrative cost.
- Boxed configuration enables tight, stable pallet builds, improving cube utilization and lowering cost per case across lanes.
- Correct NMFC usage reduces reclass inspections and chargebacks, and limits claims exposure on liquid shipments.
